Atabey Cigars
Atabey is one of three core brands from Nelson Alfonso and his Selected Tobacco company. While making a name for himself designing iconic cigars and accessories such as the Cohiba Behike BHK and Padrón's 50th anniversary humidor, Alfonso was busy crafting a cigar lineup of his own.
The line first debuted in 2012, with Atabey quickly becoming the most prominent of the three brands. As with Cohiba, the Atabey cigar takes its name from Taino Indian mythology, where Atabey represents the mother goddess, and is associated with giving life to the cultivation of tobacco and agriculture in general. The cigars take on a striking band design, with Alfonso's signature style exuding a super-premium look on par with Cuba's most luxurious releases in modern times.
And like his Cuban associates, Nelson Alfonso has kept tobacco specifics close to the vest with Atabey, only disclosing the country of origin (Costa Rica) and factory (Tabacos de Costa Rica). Outside of this, the Atabey cigar has been left to speak for itself, slowly climbing the ranks of elite cigar palates over the years, and today being known as a top choice for celebratory smoking occasions. While each size differs (more than you might expect) in profile, the line generally operates in the medium-bodied range, with highlight characteristics of clean cedar, almond butter, white pepper, and frothy cappuccino.
