Perla Del Mar Corojo
The year 2020 marked a significant milestone for America's oldest family-owned premium cigar maker, with J.C. Newman Cigar Company celebrating their 125th anniversary. This coincided with a number of celebrations, including the grand re-opening of their historic factory in Tampa, an overhaul of the Perla del Mar brand, and a third blend in the collection: Perla del Mar Corojo.
The Perla del Mar marca was first revived by J.C. Newman in 2012. The name dates back to 1905, when four Cuban brothers named the line after the Pearl of the Sea, describing the island of Cuba and its dominance of premium cigars of the time. But Perla del Mar has now been given a classy makeover and amplified tobacco recipes for the modern cigar enthusiast.
With the Perla del Mar Corojo, the cigars are rolled at Newman's own PENSA factory in Nicaragua, offering fiery Nicaraguan leaves throughout the cigar's binder and filler. This concoction is finished in a bronze-hued Ecuadorian Corojo wrapper and pressed into a rectangular shape, dubbed the 'Tampa Press.' This makes for a medium-plus body, with a cool smoking temperature delivering classic characteristics of caramel, cabinet spices, salted nuts, leather, and sweet coffee through the finish.
