Tatuaje Cabaiguan
The Tatuaje Cabaiguan is a mysterious beast within the stable of Tatuaje cigars. Sitting side by side with the likes of full-bodied powerhouse smokes, Cabaiguan pulls back on the reins, offering up a soft and subdued experience that caters to nuance and complexity over body.
This cigar first debuted in 2006, marking the first Connecticut-wrapped blend from Tatuaje. Company owner, Pete Johnson, drew inspiration from a Cuban city located in the country's Sancti Spíritus province, giving the cigar its challenging-to-pronounce (ka-buy-gwan) title.
But the Cuban influence doesn't stop with the name, as the cigars are handcrafted by the talented artisans of the García family's boutique-style El Rey de los Habanos factory in Miami. Here, traditional techniques are applied, such as entubado bunching and triple-capped heads. The blend includes an all-Nicaraguan binder/filler, topped with an especially dark selection of Ecuadorian Connecticut, appearing more similarly to that of a Habano than conventional Connecticut. The end result shows a refreshing contrast to Tatuaje's notoriously ballsy demeanor, offering aromatic, Cuban-esque characteristics of clean cedar, buttered toast, mixed nuts, and sweet nougat.
